The Stitching Hour

Fall 2018

On October 5, 2018 Fringe Society transformed a block on Detroit’s historic Avenue of Fashion through a one-night-only experience that turned the processes of making fabric into movement, sound and light. Performances in the median of the avenue were coupled with an immersive marketplace at Detroit Fiber Works.

This public arts intervention was produced during a series of workshop style rehearsals in which performers were introduced to the processes of fiber extraction, spinning, indigo dyeing and floor loom weaving through hands on demonstrations and prompts for movement.
Each performer was prompted to create their own interpretation of a textile process in motion, moving through a looped performance for a duration of five hours.

The following are a series of videos produced both as stand-alone artworks and as promotion for The Stitching Hour event.
